This intensive summer teacher-training program will prepare twenty participants with the basic knowledge and skills to implement a P-12 Chinese curriculum grounded in national and state standards.
This is an intensive, residential program, requiring 45 contact hours: 42 instructional hours on campus, from July 14 – July 22, and three hours online during the fall. Instructional formats have been designed to appeal to different learners: Lectures, hands-onactivities, discussions, group work, peer review, reflections, teaching opportunities followed by feedback, and participation online.
Current teachers of Chinese from P-12 public and private schools as well as community language schools in Georgia will be given priority for admission. Out-of-state teachers who pay for their own transportation to Kennesaw, GA, and Chinese speakers who are considering a career in teaching are also welcome to apply. Only applicants who have completed an undergraduate degree (in any field) and are interested in professional development are eligible to participate. Admission will be competitive.
The program will offer a 3-credit graduate course, CHNS 7704: Chinese Pedagogical Linguistics, which can be applied towards one of two teacher certification programs: The Alternative Teacher Preparation Program in Foreign Languages or the Master of Arts in Chinese, both of which lead to P-12 Georgia teacher certification in Chinese (Mandarin) and are offered at Kennesaw State University.
A StarTalk grant covers all costs for participants who complete the entire program successfully, including tuition & fees, room & board, and instructional materials.
